We’re thrilled to announce that Dr. Gary Silverstrom is now certified as an Orofunctional Myologist. This is just one of the many courses that Dr. Gary has enrolled in to further his education after earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the New York University College of Dentistry.
Of course, Dr. Gary Silverstrom isn’t the only member of our team who has impressive certifications, accolades, and achievements. Periodontist Dr. Samantha Aaron participates in many hours of continuing education courses each year and has presented on such topics as ramus block grafts and cone-beam versus conventional CT scans. She is also serving as co-investigator in a research study headed by Dr. Dennis Tarnow. Oral surgeon Dr. David A. Koslovsky is a lecturer, a reputable author contributing to a variety of professional journals and textbooks, and treated two of only six known cases of Rosai-Dorfman disease. Our culture of continuous growth and improvement shines through with each team member.
So, what is an Orofunctional Myologist?
Perhaps you’ve never heard of Orofunctional Myology, and you wouldn’t be alone. Orofunctional Myology (also known as myofunctional therapy) is the neuromuscular re-education or re-patterning of the oral and facial muscles. Orofunctional Myologists help people who have Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders, which are atypical, adaptive patterns that emerge in the absence of normalized patterns within the orofacial complex. The regular presence of these adaptive movements can often result in a variety of disturbances.
Examples of Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders include one or a combination of the following:
– Thumb and finger sucking habits
– A routine habit of resting with the lips apart
– A forward resting posture of the tongue between or against the teeth
– Tongue thrust
– Other harmful oral habits
A variety of pain issues like chronic facial, neck and back pain; headaches; tooth grinding & clenching; as well as temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJD or TMD) have been associated with OMDs, as have episodes of tinnitus and vertigo. We’re excited that Dr. Gary Silverstrom will now be able to help patients of all ages with these disorders.
We couldn’t be more proud of Dr. Gary, and we’re happy to share that our team is always growing and improving their skill sets to better serve our community.
